Is there anything more magical than watching the sunrise over a city skyline or slip beneath the sea? We think that everyday is a good day to spend time chasing sunrises and sunsets in unfamiliar places. Watch the light illuminate the world around you, or cast a red hue on your surroundings. These are just a few of our favourite places to start and end the day:
Watch the sunrise at…
Machu Picchu, Peru
The gates at Machu Picchu open at 5:30am, allowing visitors plenty of time to see the sun rise over the glorious UNESCO World Heritage Site. A great way to start the day, you can marvel in the magic even more as larger groups of visitors don’t make it to the site until later in the morning, leaving it almost all to yourself!
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
In order to capture that iconic Angkor Wat sunrise photo, there are a few things you need to know. 1) Gates and the ticket office open at 5am, however, it’s worth buying your ticket the day before so that you can head straight to your photo location as soon as the site is open! 2) The well-known sunrise photo of the Temples and water are taken from the reflection ponds in front of the main temple – this is a great spot for getting your iconic sunrise photo!
Grand Canyon, Arizona
The Grand Canyon is a popular attraction for both locals and visitors alike, so it comes with little surprise that sunrise can be a popular time for people to visit the exquisite natural wonder. If you’re keen to avoid the crowds and enjoy a quieter sunrise, head to Yaki Point. To access, turn right onto Rim Road before the Visitor’s Centre. Park along the road and walk the half mile to Yaki.
There are so many magical places that you can watch both the sunrise and sunset in Barcelona. Some of our favourite sunrise locations in this lively city include: any of Barcelona’s beaches, Mirador del Poble Sec and Park Guell.
Catch the sunset at …
Amalfi Coast, Italy
The Amalfi Coast is made of several small seaside towns including Amalfi, Positano and Ravello to name a few. The entire coastline is irresistibly beautiful and during the evening comes to life as the lights twinkle along the coast.
Cliffs of Moher, Ireland
As the Cliffs of Moher are located on the west coast of Ireland, the sunset it a beautiful time to visit … if you’re lucky to get a sunny day!
It is said that Santorini’s sunsets are among the most sought-after in the world … and for good reason! Some of our favourite locations to get a gorgeous Santorini sunset pic include from the water on a sunset cruise, from Oia and from Imerovigli.
Isle of Skye, Scotland
For the ultimate awe-inspiring sunset, you need to head to the Isle of Skye in Scotland. You’ll be spoilt for sunset locations; although, some of our favourites include Neist Point, Fairy Pools and The Quiraing to name a few!
